“I can’t find stylists”

This is the number one thing I hear from salon leaders across the US. It’s the problem that Talent Match specializes in helping salon leaders solve. 

Recruiting has changed so much – and the need has exploded so quickly – that most salons don’t even know where to begin. The good news is that the information you need to begin with is already information you have available at your fingertips! 

Recruiting Step 1: Identify your magic!

Let’s take a look at the most telling fact first.

Today’s salon workforce tells us that the #1 thing they care about when selecting a salon to work in is “a team that feels like a family.” 

This means that your job is to know your salons culture SO WELL that you can describe it with ease. Not generically describe it with words like “we’re a family” or  “we have a great team”.. but truly describe its magic. 

To get started with this I recommend you do a team building activity and ask 3 questions to your team members. I like to use tools like SurveyMonkey to help facilitate this kind of experience because it will make it easier for you to compile the findings. 

  1. What are the top 3 values you think describe our team at work?
  2. What are the top 3 reasons you work at (XYZ SALON)?
  3. What 3 traits do you believe someone needs to possess to thrive here as a service provider? 

Have everyone on your team answer these questions and then assess the results. Look for theme words and similarities in how the team self describes. This information is your magic! 

You can use it to craft a more compelling narrative about your team than “we’re great”.

Instead, it might sound like…

“We hustle hard and take no shortcuts. Education is our jam and we think that caring about the quality of the work is #1. We’ve been told we’re intimidating- really we are just holders of space for excellence. We’re actually a group of fun loving, hardworking stylists who want to work with other people who think being the best at what they do is sexy.”
